Reproduction and growth of the deep-sea brittlestar ophiura-ljungmani (lyman) ArchiMer
Tyler, Pa; Gage, Jd.
Reproductive biology and population dynamics of Ophiura Ijungmani were studied by measuring disk diameters and by examining oocyte size-frequencies and fecundity from a sequential seasonal series of large samples from a 2900 m deep Permanent Station in the Rockall Trough (Northeast Atlantic). Egg size (max. 90 !lm) and fecundity (up to 57000 eggs per individual) suggests indirect planktotrophic development, while a clear annual cycle in gametogenesis, with probably synchronous spawning in JanuaryFebruary, confirms a marked seasonality that is also seen as an annual, summertime set of postlarvae on to the bottom. Analysis of size structure of the population indicates annually discrete year classes with a maximum longevitv of around 10 years. lndividuals...

Reproductive and population dynamics of the Bay whiff Citharichthys spilopterus Günther, 1862 (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) in the Mamanguá Inlet, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Dias,June Ferraz; Fiadi,Carla Bertolucci; Silbiger,Helcy Lylian Nogueira; Soares,Lucy Satiko Hashimoto.
Bay whiffs, Citharichthys spilopterus, were sampled in Mamanguá Inlet between March 1990 and March 1992 for evaluation of its reproductive dynamic. Bay whiffs presented a crescent gradient of abundance from the deepest to the shallowest stations. The mean total length by oceanographic station showed a clear tendency of a relationship between bigger sizes and higher depths. Males predominated along the studied period and on the smallest length groups. Higher values of alometric condition factor, gonadosomatic relationship and spawning stage of maturity indicated a higher degree of development of the gonads on March and November. Histological analysis showed spawning females in March and May 1990 in the stations closer to the mouth of the Inlet, and spawned...

Reproductive and population parameters of discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) from Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rossoni,Felipe; Amadio,Sidinéia; Ferreira,Efrem; Zuanon,Jansen.
The ornamental discus fish Symphysodon aequifasciatus Pellegrin, 1904, is a popular endemic cichlid species from the Amazon basin, however scientific information concerning biology and ecology in its natural habitat is scarce despite its importance on the international aquarium trade. In this study we evaluated reproductive parameters of S. aequifasciatus in natural habitat in Piagaçu-Purus Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS-PP), lower Purus River, Brazilian Amazon. Males are more frequent in the larger size classes and this might be related to the complex breeding behavior known for S. aequifasciatus. Values of L50 for both sexes corresponded to more than 60% of the maximum attained length which may indicate that energy allocation for somatic growth...

Reproductive biology of Alvinocarls muricola (Decapoda : Caridea : Alvinocarididae) from cold seeps in the Congo Basin ArchiMer
Ramirez Llodra, Eva; Segonzac, Michel.
The caridean shrimp Alvinocaris niuricola has been observed forming high density populations over mussel beds on the giant pockmark cold seep site Regab in the Gulf of Guinea at 3150 m depth. Samples were collected using the ROV Victor 6000, a beam trawl and a TV grab from two sites. The specimens Were sexed and measured for population structure analysis. In one sample the sex ratio was 1:1, but the other sample had a sex ratio significantly biased towards females. The maximum size of females is larger than males. A sub-sample was used for gametogenesis and fecundity analysis. The oogenesis and spermatogenesis of A. muricola is characteristic of caridean shrimps. The oogonia proliferate from the germinal epithelium and develop into previtellogenic oocytes...

Restriction to large-scale gene flow vs. regional panmixia among cold seep Escarpia spp. (Polychaeta, Siboglinidae) ArchiMer
Cowart, Dominique; Huang, Chunya; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Carney, Susan L.; Fisher, Charles R.; Schaeffer, Stephen W..
The history of colonization and dispersal in fauna distributed among deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems remains enigmatic and poorly understood because of an inability to mark and track individuals. A combination of molecular, morphological and environmental data improves understanding of spatial and temporal scales at which panmixia, disruption of gene flow or even speciation may occur. Vestimentiferan tubeworms of the genus Escarpia are important components of deep -sea cold seep ecosystems, as they provide long-term habitat for many other taxa. Three species of Escarpia, Escarpia spicata [Gulf of California (GoC)], Escarpia laminata [Gulf of Mexico (GoM)] and Escarpia southwardae (West African Cold Seeps), have been described based on morphology, but...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Giussi, A.R.; García de la Rosa, S.B.; Sánchez, M.F.; Hansen, J.E.; Cordo, H.D.; Alvarez Colombo, G.L.; Incorvaia, I.S.; Reta, R.; Abachián, V.E..
An assessment survey on the austral fish was carried out during the summer 1997 on both the shelf and slope off southern Argentina. The cruise covered 101,508 nm2 between 45° and 54° 30'S and depths between 50 and 400 m. The survey did not include the area controlled by the United Kingdom. Considering the total area as an undivided stratum, a random sampling was used to estimate demersal fish biomass and a delta distribution-based model to evaluate mean densities. Out of the forty five species caught 28 were bony fish and 17 elasmobranch. Four cephalopod mollusc species were also identified. A biomass of 3.2 million tons (CI(95o/o): 1.90 - 6.06 millions) proved that longtail hake was the most abundant resource within the region followed by common hake...

Sex, size and timing: Sampling design for reliable population genetics analyses using microsatellite data ArchiMer
Dubois, Quentin; Lebigre, Christophe; Schtickzelle, Nicolas; Turlure, Camille.
Population genetics is used in a wide variety of fields such as ecology and biodiversity conservation. How estimated genetic characteristics of natural populations can be influenced by the sampling design has been a long-standing concern. Multiple simulation and empirical studies illustrated the influence of both sample size and polymorphism of markers. However, our review of studies on butterfly population genetics indicates no consensus on sample size for the estimation of genetic diversity or differentiation. Furthermore, other aspects of sampling design (sex ratio and timing of sampling) were not addressed and their potential impact on genetic parameter estimates rarely explored. Using a large empirical dataset (with spatial and temporal replicates)...

Some observations on the African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) in the Sondu-Miriu River of Lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Lung'ayia, H.B.O..
The African catfish Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), has an intermitent occurrence in the Sondu-Miriu river draining into lake Victoria. Observations were made to get basic information on size composition, migration, spawning period and food of this species in the river. A total of 376 fish samples of fish ranging from 11.9 to 101.1 cm in total length were examined from January to December 1989. A migration of the fish between the lake and the river waters is indicated. Small sized and immature fish were available in the river throughout the year but their numbers became minimal in the dry season. Large and mature specimens were caught mainly during the high water mark and rainy seasons of April-June and...

Lecuyer, Romain.
Chondrichtyes are threatened by several disturbances among which is the significant development of fisheries during the 20th century. The Mediterranean sea has long been fished and keeps being intensely so by several nations that seek cost-effectiveness or food security above all. Such a background does not ease data recording and sharing for research purposes. This study mainly aims at assessing the population structure and status of thornback ray so as to avoid its deterioration due to bottom-trawl fisheries pressure, hardly reversible even with a sudden sound management. To do so, an extensive panel of nuclear genetic markers has been developed to analyze underlying structure along with differenciation and genetic diversity of Mediterranean populations....

Zaabi, S.; Afli, A..

The life history of Chondrichthyans results in a low capacity to recover from the fishery human impact, Mustelus schmitti is the most landing shark in Argentina (SW Atlantic)where reductions in the abundance have been detected. The sustainability of M. schmitti to exploitation using a demographic analysis, was examined. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r)and extinction risk under several harvesting strategies were estimated. For this purpose a stage-structured female-only matrix model was applied, considering the mortality and reproductive parameters to each stage. The estimate of length at maturity from the logistic curve was 56.04 cm. The fertility per female ranged between 1 and 15 pups and it was increased with total length. The Mortality...

Using neutral, selected, and hitchhiker loci to assess connectivity of marine populations in the genomic era ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Pierre-alexandre; Broquet, Thomas; Aurelle, Didier; Viard, Frederique; Souissi, Ahmed; Bonhomme, Francois; Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Bierne, Nicolas.
Estimating the rate of exchange of individuals among populations is a central concern to evolutionary ecology and its applications to conservation and management. For instance, the efficiency of protected areas in sustaining locally endangered populations and ecosystems depends on reserve network connectivity. The population genetics theory offers a powerful framework for estimating dispersal distances and migration rates from molecular data. In the marine realm, however, decades of molecular studies have met limited success in inferring genetic connectivity, due to the frequent lack of spatial genetic structure in species exhibiting high fecundity and dispersal capabilities. This is especially true within biogeographic regions bounded by well-known...

Variance additivity of genetic populational parameter estimates obtained through bootstrapping Scientia Agricola
Carlini-Garcia,Luciana Aparecida; Vencovsky,Roland; Coelho,Alexandre Siqueira Guedes.
Studying the genetic structure of natural populations is very important for conservation and use of the genetic variability available in nature. This research is related to genetic population structure analysis using real and simulated molecular data. To obtain variance estimates of pertinent parameters, the bootstrap resampling procedure was applied over different sampling units, namely: individuals within populations (I), populations (P), and individuals and populations simultaneously (I, P). The considered parameters were: the total fixation index (F or F IT), the fixation index within populations (f or F IS) and the divergence among populations or intrapopulation coancestry (theta or F ST). The aim of this research was to verify if the variance...

IBSS Repository
